Is Your Child Ready for the Next Step After AB Patterns?
The ABB pattern is the natural second step in learning logical sequences. Unlike the AB pattern — where two elements simply alternate (🔴🔵🔴🔵) — the ABB pattern introduces a new rule: the first element appears once, and the second element repeats twice:
🔴🔵🔵 🔴🔵🔵 🔴🔵🔵
The goal is to identify what’s repeating and predict what comes next — which requires a different kind of attention than the AB pattern does.
This worksheet is designed for children ages 4 to 5 and includes full bilingual support (English and Spanish), making it ideal for Hispanic families in the United States who want to build both logical thinking and bilingual vocabulary at the same time.

A Note for Parents:
If your child gets confused, don’t correct them right away. Instead, ask: “How many times does the second one appear?” Let them count and figure it out. That process — noticing, counting, adjusting — is exactly what builds the skill.

What Does the ABB Pattern Actually Build?
The ABB pattern is more challenging than the AB because the child has to hold two different pieces of information in mind at once: which element comes first, and that the second one repeats.
How to Use This Worksheet at Home
Pro tip: The most important step is number 5 — letting them work through it without jumping in. The productive struggle is where the learning happens.
🧩 Want to reinforce this activity with physical materials? Colored blocks and sorting tiles work especially well alongside this worksheet — they make the ABB rule visible and tangible before working on paper. → [See our guide: Best Pattern Toys for Kids Ages 3–6]
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this worksheet completely free?
Yes, completely free. No sign-up required.
What’s the difference between an AB and an ABB pattern?
In an AB pattern, two elements alternate equally: 🔴🔵🔴🔵. In an ABB pattern, the first element appears once and the second appears twice: 🔴🔵🔵🔴🔵🔵. The ABB is more complex because the child has to track both the order and the frequency of each element.
Do I need any extra materials?
Just the printed sheet. Scissors and crayons are optional. You can also reinforce the activity with colored blocks or tiles — having a physical version of the pattern before working on paper makes the rule much easier to grasp.
What Age Is This For?
This worksheet is designed for children ages 4 to 5. If your child hasn’t fully mastered the AB pattern yet, start there first. If they complete the ABB easily, the next steps are the ABC pattern and missing-piece activities.
